GitHub Pages and Jekyll 4.0.0

Jekyll 4.0.0 has been out for almost two months now, yet GitHub Pages still uses Jekyll 3.8.5. The differences in 4.0.0 features described in the documentation (such as the new {% link %} behaviour) make it a pain to be backwards compatible for GitHub Pages.

Does anyone know the typical amount of time GitHub Pages takes to adopt new Jekyll versions? Or a place where they might share these kind of timelines?

I’ve found a similar discussion as a GitHub issue on the pages-gem repository. That will probably be where the news is posted.
